The CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) is a United States government agency which functions as a foreign intelligence service. Established in 1947 largely in response to the Soviet Union and the tensions of the Cold War era, the agency gathers intelligence but is also known for covert operations and involvement in other countries.
In popular culture, the CIA is typically simplified as an espionage agency, or collection of spies and/or action heroes, as on Mission: Impossible, Alias, and the James Bond franchise (usually via ally Felix Leitner or similar agents). If not presented in that light, the CIA is usually involved in murkier government conspiracies which may or may not involve extraterrestrials or superheroes.
