Betsy Ross (1752-1836) was an American seamstress who is often credited as creating the first American Flag.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ross and her husband owned an upholstery business, and after his death, American lore tells of the widowed Ross meeting with George Washington and others at her upholstery business, which is said to have resulted in the sewing of the first U.S. "stars and stripes" flag.
