Threaten

For the game term indicating danger to a player, see Threat.

Threaten is a slang term used by Magic R&D to describe spells that temporary steal creatures ("Untap target creature and gain control of it until end of turn. That creature gains haste until end of turn"). It is named after the eponymous Threaten.[1] Although the mechanic has also appeared in blue, it is now a firmly red mechanic. It is a popular type of card for sacrifice strategies, as a player could Threaten creatures to sacrifice for their payoffs.

During the revamp of core sets in Magic 2010, the card was renamed Act of Treason as the flavor was slightly off ("threaten" in the context of for "coercing another by force" was not as reflective of the mechanics) and has been reprinted as such until Core Set 2020, after which other variants were used. Since the introduction of Play Boosters, the mechanic has moved from common to uncommon cards.[1]
