Reod Dai was a mercenary wizard from Icatia on Dominaria.[1][2]
Description
Reod had long night-black hair, a short beard, and startlingly bright blue eyes, like robins' eggs. He wore a big cloak to protect himself from the cold.[2]
History
Reod Dai was born Robin Davies and was a Captain in the Icatian army. He changed his name when he joined the Order of the Ebon Hand. Through his connection with the Ebon Hand, Reod arranged for a trade deal with Havenwood, which allowed for the elves to receive thrull flesh that they fused with a fungus using green magic, creating the thallids, a plentiful, if somewhat bland, food source. The Elder Druids Kolevi and Lalani then made a new deal with Reod, hiring him to create a distraction on the southern borders of Icatia so that the humans would not notice the continual trade between the elves and the Ebon Hand.[2]
Reod was successful in this task, which he completed by forming a truce between the goblins and the orcs of the Crimson Peaks, teaching them various tactics such as using the Goblin Grenade to blow up walls, Goblin Kites to fly over walls, and Goblin War Drums to confuse the enemy. He also taught them several things that inhibited the power of their combined army. However, after a few years of being paid for this service, with the goblins and orcs harassing the southern Icatian borders, Reod Dai met Kistefar, an emissary of the Havenwood elves to discuss the renewal of their contract. However, the contract was cut abruptly, leaving Reod without funds and a hazardous situation in his hands.[2]
Meeting with the supplier of his explosive dragon eggs, the dwarf Melelki, Reod attempted to buy the whole batch of eggs without paying its agreed-upon sum, which Melelki refused. One of the eggs hatched prematurely and started destroying the dwarves' house. Reod saved them by causing the dragon whelp to explode, but the house was also destroyed. Reod then tries to use a simple seduction spell against Tamun to convince her to give him the remaining eggs, but the dwarf's heat causes the spell to backfire, and both fall in love. The three dwarves then decided to accompany Reod on his journey to Havenwood, with a cart of dragon eggs.[2]
On the road, they passed by Kalitas, a dwarven town that had been destroyed by the orc-goblin army. When they reached Havenwood, Reod Dai tried to blow up the Thallid farm of the elves, but a magical ward caused two dragon eggs to hatch without explosion, and at the same time instilling a limited form of intelligence in the thallids. That night, Sekena decided to leave the group with the two hatched whelps, much to Melelki's dismay.[2]
Reod, Melelki, and Tamun reached the elven fortress and buried the eggs around the buildings, before being spotted and captured by the elves. Reod managed to convince the elves to let the dwarves go and accompany them to Teedmar. He was brought before the elves' elders, Kolevi and Lalani, who restated that they did not have any more need for Reod Dai's work. Reod was put in prison, from which he managed to escape with the help of the unsuspecting elven child Andli, before blowing up the buried eggs and causing a great fire in the stronghold.[2]
Reod then traveled to Teedmar to find Tamun but instead encountered Eliza, his long-time friend turned Farrelite. Reod and Eliza were ambushed and abducted by an Ebon Hand wizard, who showed them Teedmar being buried in a volcanic eruption. Reod then found himself in Achtep Keep, the stronghold of the Ebon Hand, where he was brought before Genkr Nik, his teacher when he was an acolyte. They make a deal that Reod would teach the Ebon Hand the secret of the Goblin Grenade, but Reod betrays the deal by starting a rebellion among the Hand's thrulls. Genkr discovered this, and started to torture Reod, but was saved by Eliza before irreparable damage could be done. Aided by the thrull rebellion, the two fled to Icatian lands. Eliza left Reod, to return to Teedmar. He feared that Melelki and Tamun were killed in the volcanic eruption until a dwarf told him that the survivors, helped by a dragon, fled to Gurn Keep.[2]
Reod arrived at the keep to find it besieged by the orc-goblins army. He reached the keep gates, thanks to his influence among the orcs, and was brought before Hamon, the dwarf elder. Reod agreed to help the dwarves with their resistance, all the while searching for Tamun. However, the dwarves grow increasingly suspicious of his motivations and lock him up in prison. Without Reod directing them, the dwarves are unable to put up a working resistance and the keep is invaded by the goblins.[2]
As the fall of the keep becomes clear, Reod's prison guards leave one by one, and he can locate Melelki and Tamun and bring them to the wall of the keep. Sekena brought her dragon to the keep and carried the three away from the keep shortly before it was completely overwhelmed. Safe on the dragon's peak, Tamun told Reod that even if he caused much suffering to Sarpadia and the dwarves, she still wanted to marry him. Reod permitted himself to be at peace for a moment, even if his promise to the Thrulls was already calling him away.[2]
