Rainbow Stairwell is a constructed variant, similar to Highlander.
Deck construction
- A Rainbow Stairwell deck must be exactly 60 cards, six cards from each of the five colors as well as six artifacts or colorless cards.
- Only one copy of each card in the deck, with the exception of basic lands.
- You must have one each, for each color, of cards with converted mana cost one through six. That is, you must have a staircase of cards starting at one mana and moving up to six, for each color.
- Multicolored cards are not allowed.
Example
An example for the white part of the deck would be:
: Righteousness
: Accorder Paladin
: Griffin Sentinel
: Foriysian Interceptor
: Burrenton Shield-Bearers
: Nacatl Hunt-Pride
Variants
Phyrexian Stairwell
Rather than every color contain six cards with converted mana cost one through six, each subsequent color chosen shifts the range of values up by one so that the second color chosen would have cards with converted mana cost two through seven and so on.
Alara Shard Stairwell
Each player picks one of the shards from Shards of Alara and modifies the colors used in their stairwell to include mono-colored cards & multicolored cards in the shard's identity as well as colorless. The range of converted mana costs is also increased to one through seven to account for the missing sixth color. This variant also leaves one extra slot which can be used to house an extra land or one card with a converted mana cost of eight.
