Role in the Film
Moana 2:
Simea is first seen during the song We’re Back, where she and other villager kids were listening to Moni telling the story of Moana and Maui restoring the Heart Of Te Fiti and reviving their voyager heritage and showing his fan art. When Moana returned to Motunui, Simea rambunctiously rushed to reunite with her at the beach. When the two sisters reunited, Simea complained to her big sister saying that she was gone forever with Moana replying that it was 3 days. Simea then eagerly asks what present she brought for her, Then Moana shows her the clay jar making an unimpressed Simea question of what it does. Moana takes her to the cave that Tala showed Moana that they were voyagers. Moana tells Simea about Tautai Vasa and his goal was to connect the island to the people of the entire ocean before Maui stole the Heart of Te Fiti and they forbid voyaging and Moana can continue what he started now that she is a wayfinder. When Simea suggests that Moana should make Maui go so she can stay on Motunui with her, Moana jokingly says that if Maui shows up, grab him by the ear and tell him that.
During the ceremony, Moana was seen doing a dance off with a boy and 3 girls before winking at them, which Simea mimics. Just when Moana was named a legendary wayfinder, a lightning strike almost strikes her, causing her to get knocked out, (which causes her to get a vision from Tautai Vasa), alarming the villagers including Simea. When Moana learns about Nalo and Motufetu, she sees the comet and realizes that she has to follow it to get to Motufetu, with her parents worrying that if she may not come back. However, Simea overhears the conversation, causing her to be distraught and heartbroken. Moana tries to calm her down but Simea runs off crying, begging her big sister not to leave.
During the song Beyond, Simea was seen with Tui and Sina when they tried to comfort her but Simea was still emotionally struggling. She was seen again sleeping when Moana watches her sleep and moves her hair out of her face, worried that if she won’t be with her little sister, she wouldn’t grow to understand. When Moana decides to go to the ancient island and gathers her crew and packs for the voyage, she picks up a basket that was unusually heavy. When she opens it, she sees her heartbroken sister in it. Simea pleads to let her come with her but Moana reassures her that she’ll be back as soon as she can, but Simea asks what if she won’t come back. Unable to find words to her question, Moana takes her to the shore where she reveals to Simea that the Ocean is a living spirit, their friend, and that it connects them. Moana tells her that there is nowhere she could ever go that she won’t be with her ( the same way Tala told Moana). Simea then gives her starfish so Moana can take a piece from Motunui where she places it in her locket. When Moana starts to leave, her parents and little sis give her a goodbye family hug and wave to her as she sails to Motufetu.
During the song What Could Be Better Than This, Moana uses the ocean to communicate with her little sister, where Simea drew a heart on the water and splashes on it to get Moana wet.
After Moana and her crew got sucked in a giant clam, while helping the Kakamora, and got separated, Moana sees Simea in the cave and the two reunite. Simea then tells Moana that her story will end and the ancestors hate Moana, while Simea turns into a bat. However, Moana wakes up only to realize it was a nightmare after getting knocked out.
Back on Motunui, Simea was on the beach looking at a hermit crab while also sitting by the water eagerly waiting for Moana to return, just in time to see Maui visiting the island. When the two meet, Maui gives her another present from Moana: a stone to look through. When she looks through it, she sees Moana and her crew coming back. Simea joyfully runs to Moana where they reunited again and their parents come in and share a family hug then Moana shows them the other wayfinders that came with them. Simea was seen holding the stone that Maui gave to her at the celebration held in Moana’s honor. Simea was last seen giving a shell to Moana only to startle her with the hermit crab and giving her another shell that is actually empty and the two hugged before Moana and her crew leaves for another journey with Simea being carried by Tui waving to them.

Relationships
Family:
Moana
Sharing a very strong bond and loving relationship with her big sister, Simea always looks up to Moana and enjoys spending time with her and idolizes to be just like her when she grows up. Simea is interested in her people's history and following in Moana's footsteps. Moana is not just a big sister and best friend to Simea, she is also a guardian and leader to Simea. She also hates it when Moana leaves for a new journey, but Simea gives her a different item from the island to never forget her home and family. When Moana returns to Motunui after finding proof of other people, Simea rambunctiously runs to the shore where she reunites with her big sister. After Moana shows her the cave and Tautai Vasa’s history, a ceremony was held where Moana will be named a legendary wayfinder and Moana does a dance off with a group of kids before winking with Simea doing the same as well proving their relationship is very strong.
However after Moana gets a vision from her ancestor about a power hungry god and an ancient island, she learns that she has to leave again so soon with her parents worried of her safety. However, they saw Simea overheard the conversation and she gets upset and runs away. Simea hides in a basket to come with her sister, she was however found by Moana when she lifted the basket up. The sisters go to the shore where Moana reveals that the Ocean is a spirit and tells Simea what Tala told her when she left for her first voyage. Simea then takes off the starfish off her anklet where she gives to Moana so she can take a piece from home. Simea and her parents joined Moana to give her a family hug before she left with her crew.
Even though Moana is far from home, she uses the ocean to communicate with her little sister to let her know that they are always together.
After Moana breaks the curse and becomes a demigoddess, She and her crew along with Maui return to Motunui where Simea excitedly sees them and runs to her big sister where they share a hug along with Tui and Sina. When Moana leaves for another voyage, Simea gives her a shell before startling her with a hermit crab and gives her an empty shell and the two sisters hugged before Moana leaves.
Chief Tui
Simea shares a close relationship with her father (as well her mother). Tui cares for her the same way he did for Moana. When Simea runs away crying after overhearing about Moana leaving again so soon to Motufetu, Moana tries to calm her down but Tui stops her and nods meaning that he will attempt to calm her proving his relationship with his youngest daughter to be strong. He and Sina tried to comfort her but Simea still remains upset. When Moana leaves for her journey, Tui along with his wife and youngest daughter share a family hug with Moana.
When Moana and her crew return home, Simea sees them and joyfully runs to them where they hugged each other with Tui hugging with his wife and his two daughters.
Sina
Just like Tui, Simea shares a close relationship with her mother as well. Sina treats her the same way she treated Moana when she was a toddler. During the ceremony, Simea comes to her mother where Sina picks her up and carries her for a little bit. However, a lightning strike knocks out Moana, shocking Sina holding, a little bit tightly, a worried Simea proving that Sina cares much for her as well. When Simea overheard about Moana leaving again, she gets upset and runs away with Tui catching up to her with Sina behind him to comfort their sadden youngest daughter. They attempted to comfort her with Sina holding Simea’s hand, but it was not enough to calm their youngest daughter down. When Moana leaves for her journey, Sina carries Simea and shared a family hug with Moana.
When Moana and her crew return home, Simea sees them and joyfully runs to them where they hugged each other with Sina hugging with her husband and her two daughters.

Trivia
- She is 3 years old during the events of the second film.
- Since the sequel takes place three years after the events of the previous film, Sina (Moana and Simea's mom) must've become pregnant sometime during the events of the original film (or at least shortly thereafter) while Moana was out voyaging throughout the ocean.
- It’s probably most likely that Sina started to be pregnant before Moana started her chief training and sets out on her first voyage.
- The name Simea means "listen" or "God has heard" in Hebrew.
- She mostly calls Moana Big Sis.
- Despite her role being a little big in the sequel, and some general criticism of the movie, she has already become a fan favorite character of the Moana franchise
- It’s most likely that if Moana 3 is confirmed, Simea might have a bigger role in the film and more screen time than the sequel and would definitely age more, and possibly be a part of Moana’s crew and come wih her on her next journey
- The concept of Moana having siblings was touched upon during the story development of the first film, as Moana was originally going to be the youngest/only daughter of ten children -- her nine older brothers would've sailed off the island, leaving their sister behind, but Moana would've eventually gone off to rescue them.
- Simea has the personality that Moana had when she was the same age of her little sister in the previous film, when Moana was rambunctious and had a connection to the sea.
- Her name was inspired by David Derrick Jr’s daughter’s name Samea, and her relationship with Moana was inspired by David Derrick Jr’s son Quentin. it gave the idea to David because his oldest daughter and youngest son do everything together, just like Moana and Simea. His son also hates it when Samea leaves, which also resembles Simea getting upset whenever Moana leaves for a new voyage.
- Simea's outfit has the same color palate that Moana wore in the first film.
- if possible, she could become the next Matai of Motunui if Moana abdicates the position.
- Her quote “Big Sis” is the most spoken line in Moana 2.
- According to the script, she was originally gonna be in the MoanaBes’ canoe with them waving goodbye to Moana at the end of the sequel.
- She is the second sibling of a Disney Princess to be introduced in a sequel.
- Cassandra (Tangled) from Tangled: The Series is technically the first, since Rapunzel views her as a surrogate sister as the biological daughter of Mother Gothel.
- When Simea first meets Maui, she grabbed him by the ear which is the same way Moana met Maui in the first film.
- This was also foreshadowed when Moana showed Simea the cave and Simea said that Moana should make Maui go so she can stay and Moana said to grab him by the ear to tell him that.
- At the beginning of the first film, Simea references Moana's first meeting with Maui by repeating the instructions Tala gave Moana before passing. This is what inspires Simea to do the same to Maui when she meets him herself.
- This also proves that Simea is very eager to meet Maui and is also willing to grab him by the ear when needed to.
