- “I'm glad to, Crispin. Pardon if I don't call you Your Highness, but you're really nothing of the sort.”
- ―Gorsen to Crispin
Gorsen was a hedgehog on Mistmantle Island and a member of the Hedgehog Host, a band of hedgehogs who originally were forced by Captain Husk to mine for gold and silver for him, who remained loyal to him after Husk's death.
History
Urchin and the Heartstone
Gorsen was a member of the Hedgehog Host, a group of hedgehogs forced to mine for gold and silver when Husk was in power. Afterwards, he became a tower hedgehog who was respected by many animals, and there was talk that he was to be accepted into the Circle.
He was sent to guard Ambassador Treeth and block the underground tunnel that led to the Throne Room. However, instead Gorsen plotted with Treeth, and later he along with nine other Mistmantle hedgehogs attempted to kill and overthrow King Crispin. While meeting with King Crispin, Lord Treeth attacked him with a dagger, but failed to kill him as Crispin deflected the dagger with his sword. Gorsen and nine other hedgehogs aided Lord Treeth and attacked King Crispin and his followers. Padra joined the fight, as well as many other animals such as Sepia, Gleaner, and Fingal. Also, because Burr the mole spilled wine while serving it to Lord Treeth, it caused many of the rebels to slip and fall, in part leading to the rebellion's defeat. Soon, the battle was over when Docken, a loyal hedgehog, charged into the room followed by a company of armed moles.
As a result of the battle it was revealed that Whitewings intended to steal Urchin and that they were never allies to Mistmantle. Gorsen revealed that if he succeeded, his plan was to become king of Mistmantle under King Silverbirch, and he even intended to send slaves to Whitewings as a token of loyalty. His fate is unknown, although it's most possible that he was jailed or exiled.
Appearance
Gorsen was a tall hedgehog with a bronze tip to his spines, large black eyes, and a purposeful stride. He was regarded as having striking good looks which earned him attention of many female hedgehogs on the island.
Personality
- “Red tails are nothing!”
- ―Gorsen
Gorsen had strong feelings that hedgehogs were superior to all other animals and were the rightful kings of Mistmantle. Gorsen's reason for attacking Crispin was that he didn't feel that a squirrel could be king, believing that only hedgehogs could be kings. He also pointed out that all of Mistmantle's troubles had been caused by squirrels, naming Lady Aspen and Captain Husk. The irony of his plans and ideas were lost to him until they were pointed out by Crispin, who told him that hedgehogs would've been looked at with anger, similarly to how Gorsen viewed squirrels, had his coup been successful.
