Es

I have the duty to manage and organize this prison.

—Es

Es (エス, Esu?) is the Prison Guard and the protagonist of the music project MILGRAM.

They are voiced by Amami Yurina.

Description

An existence that can be viewed as the protagonist, or your representation.
They woke up with their memories gone, and became the guard of MILGRAM Prison. With no memories about themself, they perform their duty as a guard without doubting their origin, as per Jackalope’s instructions. Es’s role is to decide whether the prisoner’s sins are to be “forgiven” or “not forgiven”.

A fickle and beautiful figure, yet their gender is unknown.

Background

Before MILGRAM

Due to their memory loss, not much is known about Es prior to working at MILGRAM.

Season 1

In the beginning, Es awakes in MILGRAM lacking all of their memories. They are told by Jackalope that they're the prison guard to MILGRAM, and that their job is to find out the motives behind the 10 prisoners murders, and decide whether they are innocent or guilty.

At the end of the first trial, Jackalope reported to them the results of their voting, then put them to sleep, waiting until the second trials begin to wake them up.

Season 2

Personality

Having no recollection of their memory prior to arriving at Milgram, Es is shown to be dedicated and loyal towards their role as the prison guard of MILGRAM Prison. With a professional and ‘no-nonsense’-like personality, they’re often seen as distant, indifferent, and strict when it comes to interacting with the other prisoners. In addition, it’s also known that they can be easily irritated and annoyed at things that personally bother them.

Despite this, there are rare occasions where Es shows understanding and sympathy for the prisoners; these moments are primarily shown in the Second Trial, where Es tells Fuuta that they feel guilt in what their decisions had led to (as well as admitting that they’ve started to see the prisoners as their ‘comrades’), and thanks Shidou for his existence in Milgram, especially in regards to his service of aiding both Mahiru and Fuuta’s injuries.

They’re seemingly quick to fall into distress upon the questioning of their constant slip-ups of using “We” and “Us” rather than “I” and “Me”, as well as accidentally referring to themselves as a group of people rather than their own individual self. In general, questions relating to existentialism directed towards them seem to trigger Es.

No. Voice Line Audio
1 Nice to meet you, prisoners. My name is Es. I’m the guard of this prison.
2 This is MILGRAM Prison. A place that exists to judge the sins of those like you.
3 I don’t know much about you [prisoners]. All I know is that you’re all murderers.
4 Regarding the rest, I’ll have you tell me all of it thoroughly later. Starting over again, welcome to MILGRAM. I hope you have a good prison life.
5 I want to know about your sins. Deciding whether they’re forgivable, or utterly unforgivable is my role.

Trivia

  • Their sashes read “prison officer” and “omnibus dubitandum” in MILGRAM language.
    • "Omnibus dubitandum" means “Doubt everything” in Latin.
  • Their name is the German term for “id”, the unconscious, not self-aware part of a human personality that is driven by innate desires.
  • They seem to have a complex about their unthreatening appearance.
  • They are protected by an invisible wall that is erected whenever they are at risk, rendering them immune to any physical attack from the prisoners.
  • If MILGRAM has an arm-wrestling contest, Es would not be participating, as they do not want to be at the same level as the prisoners.[1]
