The Dropter[1] is a species of small, aggressive winged creatures in Metroid Dread.
Description
They appear in Artaria, and resemble rays, with beige undersides, purple backs, and luminescent green stripes along their wings and spine. Their faces are dominated by a three-part beak, which is normally retracted into the body, but extends when attacking. When approached, a Dropter will lunge at Samus, which she is able to Melee Counter. If she is hit by the attack, she will lose about 30 units of energy.
After the X Parasites are released from Elun, all Dropters become infected by the X. Their behavior and appearance do not change, aside from releasing an X upon their demise. Aside from their natural habitat in Artaria, the X spawn Dropters in Hanubia in an effort to stop Samus from escaping ZDR's destruction.
Variants
Sharpaw
The Sharpaw[1] is a vivid green variant of the Dropter that exists in Dairon, Burenia, and Hanubia. The only difference between Sharpaws and regular Dropters is their tentacle-like mouths and brighter colors. Otherwise, they behave the same, flapping around before charging at Samus in a counterable attack. Once infected by the X, their behavior and appearance do not change.
Iceflea
The Iceflea is a similar creature that exists in cold environments, only appearing after the X outbreak. It acts the same as its relatives but when defeated, it unleashes an icy explosion that can fatally damage Samus due to her Metroid genes unless she obtains the Gravity Suit.
Trivia
- The Dropter's behavior is highly reminiscent of the Gullugg from Metroid: Samus Returns, with both creatures being common flying enemies that aggressively lunge at Samus and can be Melee Countered.
- Two Dropters are used in the Samus Screen tutorial for the Phantom Cloak.
