Club Nintendo (initially known as the Nintendo Fun Club) is a rewards system for Nintendo consumers, chiefly relegated to exchanging points-based prizes for purchasing and registering games and consoles.
Some prizes have always been available, such as the Metroid: Other M Screensaver, while others are available on a limited basis, such as Virtual Console games. Metroid II: Return of Samus was made available in North America from December 2012 to January 2013 and Super Metroid was exchangeable from April 2013 to May 2013.[1][2] Wii U owners who redeemed their coins for Super Metroid in the previously stated time period were refunded their coins and given a complementary download code for either console in May as a result of acknowledging that the game was available on Wii U that same month for thirty cents.[3]
Earning enough coins over the course of a year can earn users Gold status, which offers a free physical reward, or Platinum status, which allows users to choose either the Gold reward or a Platinum reward such as Metroid II in 2012.
A calendar was offered in 2012 to those who had reached Gold status. Promotions for the calendar showed images from the 2011 iteration. These were placeholders for the new images. Samus Aran, in both her Varia and Zero Suits, was featured in the month of October using artwork from a Metroid: Other M promotional render.
In May 2014, Super Metroid was made available as a Club Nintendo bonus for 200 coins.
In December 2014, an NES Remix 2 shirt depicting Samus in 8-bit style shooting through the Mushroom Kingdom was offered for 700 coins.
Club Nintendo was closed down in June 30th, 2015 in North America, and September 30th the same year in Europe and Japan. It was replaced by My Nintendo.
