Max

Maxine "Max" Work is a character that was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Character

The limited information given on her character originates in Hideo Kojima's original game plan, which was later included with The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2. Concept artwork created by series artist Yoji Shinkawa was reprinted in The Art of Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, also included in The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2.

Max was to have served as a member of Raiden's radio support team, during the Big Shell Incident. Her role was to save the game data and provide information on sensor equipment and the radar. Unlike Mei Ling's Chinese proverbs from the previous game, Max would quote William Shakespeare instead. It would later be revealed that she was actually an AI construct, along with other members of Raiden's support team, while attempting to trick the player using the save data. This was later passed over to the role of Rosemary.

Like Peter Stillman, William "Doc" Wilson (another unused character), and the Colonel's originally planned name of "Daniel Quinn," Max's name is a reference to the many aliases assumed by the main character in the Paul Auster novel City of Glass.
