NXP was a prefix for Federation starships, specifically used by experimental Starfleet vessels built for technology demonstration and trial testing. These registry numbers are assigned based on the year of the Starfleet proposal that gave rise to their construction. The Defiant-class "pathfinder", built for a 2365 proposal for a vessel capable of fighting the Borg, had the registry NXP-2365WP/T. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)
