Ivory was a naturally occurring substance from Earth. Ivory grew from the faces of Elephants and similar creatures. This substance was valued for carving purposes, purported aphrodisiac qualities and, in the early 20th century, it's novelty value. Hikaru Sulu practiced ivory carving using an artificial supplement.
