A host was an individual that carried another in a symbiotic or parasitic relationship. Joined Trill were a symbiotic species, consisting of humanoid Trills and wormlike symbionts. (TNG episode: "The Host")
History
In the 23rd century, some Humans were believed to have extrasensory perception. These telepathic "New Humans" turned out to be the unwitting hosts of dormant Medusans. (TOS novel: The Higher Frontier)
Until the 24th century, the Trill kept their symbiotic relationship with the vulnerable symbionts a secret from the wider Federation. (DS9 - Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novel: Trill: Unjoined)
