The Chiarans are a spacefaring species. Originally from the Alpha Quadrant, the Chiarans traveled to the Gamma Quadrant and settled on the planet Chiara there thousands of years ago.
In 2369, several Chiaran slaves traveled through the Bajoran wormhole and requested asylum on Deep Space 9. Rogon, a Chiaran military officer, pursued them to the station with the intention of bringing them back to Chiara, but his views softened when he met them. After his crew launched a mutiny that eventually failed, some of the former Chiarans slaves returned home, while some settled on the original Alpha Quadrant planet that their people originated from that Jadzia Dax was able to discern and locate.
