Bilar

Bilar was a 23rd century Betan man living on the planet Beta III in the 2260s decade. (TOS episode & Star Trek 9 novelization: The Return of the Archons)

Biography

Bilar approached a landing party from the Federation starship USS Enterprise that was visiting the Betan city in the year 2267. He was initially quite friendly, although his demeanor seemed a bit odd to the Starfleet officers. Bilar suggested that if the team were travelers from the valley, they could probably stay at Reger's house, referring to an inn nearby. Bilar asked Tula, Reger's daughter, if there were accommodations available. However, while they were conversing, the red hour was struck, and the Festival began. Bilar and Tula went mad, and the insanity spread to all passersby.

Christopher Lindstrom reported to Reger that Reger's daughter had been caught up in the mêlée, expressing concern in the face of her being assaulted by Bilar. Reger only responded that it was "the way of Landru". Later, Lindstrom pointed Bilar out as the man who had assaulted Tula, but Reger disregarded the accusation, as he believed that Bilar had not truly been at fault. (TOS episode: "The Return of the Archons")

Appendices

Background

Bilar was played by Ralph MaurerMA, who later also played a Nazi guard in TOS episode: "Patterns of Force" in TOS season 2. Bilar's dialogue was re-recorded and dubbed in post-production, possibly due to noise on the location shooting set. Whether by accident or design, the synchronization of the dialogue created a somewhat bizarre cadence to his speech in the final cut of the episode, perfectly suited to a beatific characterization of a follower of Landru.
