Bessie was a literary character featured in Artie's Gals comic books, a publication that was known in the 23rd century.
History and specifics
Bessie was a famous character with a "heart of gold" according to Shiboline M'Ress, who read comics ever since she was a child. Bessie attended a fictional 20th century high school in Brookdale on the planet Earth, where she often competed with Verona for the attention of Artie.

In the year 2269, after discovering he was the writer/artist in what appeared to be a comic book alternate reality, Captain Daniel Fontana brought Starfleet officers into the Artie's Gals comic for his amusement. Captain James T. Kirk, Commander Spock, M'Ress, and Nyota Uhura watched as Artie broke a date with Bessie so he could attend a pool party at Verona's house. She was impressed when the landing party dealt with a confrontation with Big Ox.
When Kirk said they needed technology to find a way home, she brought them to the pool party. She wore a bikini, not expecting that Verona would be wearing the same outfit. When Spock pointed out that she deserved to be with someone who would prioritize her, then introduced her to a better match, she became enraptured by his logic. She was stunned upon hearing that she and Verona were genetically identical apart from hair color. (TAS comic: "The Scheimer Barrier")
- Bessie's analog, the Archie Comics character Betty Cooper, appeared on the subscriber variant cover to "Live Evil, Part 3" wearing a 2260s-era Starfleet uniform.
