Anij was a Ba'ku woman. She came from the Ka'bu race but she and others broke away and rejected technology. They settled on a planet in the Briar Patch, where metaphasic radiation from the planet's rings gave them immortality.
In 2375, Anij worked with Jean-Luc Picard to investigate the Son'a and Starfleet's activity on the planet, discovering that the Son'a were former Ba'ku and that they were working to forcibly remove the Ba'ku from the planet. Picard and his crew stopped the relocation and he and Anij started a romantic relationship. (TNG movie & novelization: Insurrection)
After Picard resigned from Starfleet, Anij offered Picard to move to the Ba'ku planet. Will Riker thought that Picard should have done so. (PIC novel: The Dark Veil)
In an alternate timeline affected by the temporal anomaly crisis, Anij appeared in local space and joined the effort to help resolve the crisis and related events. (ST video game: Timelines)
