The government of the Americas continents orders an academia purge.^[2]
Dragged off course by an alien intelligence, Earth spaceship ESS Charybdis reaches Theta 116 star system. An artificial environment for Colonel Stephen G. Richey, who piloted the starship, is created, based on the book Hotel Royale, after the alien accidentally decimates the Charybdis crew. The vessel breaks up under the aliens influence in orbit of planet Theta VIII.^[3]
An adolescent Zefram Cochrane is diagnosed with a particularly severe kind of bipolar disorder, though it had not yet begun to manifest. He received a cerebral implant to treat the condition.^[4]

Mind Control Revolt: Beginning in 2043, a bloody affair on Earth which occurred when Humans rose up against those who would use brain implants to control their behavior. This uprising would end in 2047.^[5]
