The Internet (インターネット Intānetto), Net for short, is a great network connecting computer terminals around the world. In the Mega Man Battle Network series, the rapid development of the Internet has made it more convenient in the year 200X, thanks to the research made by Dr. Hikari, which was continued by his son. However, network crime has also increased, with organizations like World Three, Gospel and Nebula taking advantage of it, and organizations like the NetPolice and Official Center working to counter it. The internet's cyberworld is inhabited by programs such as NetNavis, Mr. Progs, and viruses. The government bears the costs of operating the network, communication charges from PETs and other devices being paid from taxes.[1]
By the year 22XX, the internet no longer exists, data being transfered as EM Waves in the Wave World, but the cyberworld still exists.[2]
As a location
The Internet is a recurring location in the Mega Man Battle Network series. In the first Mega Man Battle Network game the main virtual areas are only referred as Internet and consist of maze like pathways that connect each area and certain computer terminals like Lan's PC, Mayl's Piano, Yai's Portrait, etc. Starting in Mega Man Battle Network 2 areas of the Internet became more themed and named around the various real world locations in the game including ACDC Town, Netopia, Kotobuki, etc. This trend would remain throughout the rest of the series except in Rockman.EXE 4.5 Real Operation where the Internet is numbered similar to the first game.
Other media
Internet appeared in the MegaMan NT Warrior anime series, the MegaMan NT Warrior manga, and in Battle Story MegaMan NT Warrior.
