Zamboula was a a city, built by the Stygians around an oasis in the Kharamun Desert, and controlled by Turan, during the Hyborian Age.[1]
History
Origin
Zamboula was originally a small oasis in the Kharamun Desert when Stygian invaders first came.[1] They built the city of Zamboula,[2][1] bringing Stygian citizens along with Shemite and Kushite slaves to inhabit the city.[1]
Hyborian Agen
Zamboula was later conquered by Turan.[1]
Age of Conan
By the Age of Conan, circa 10,000 BC, Zamboula was ruled by Turan,[2] through a satrap. Zamboula was a major trading center, and the westernmost outpost of the Turanian Empîre.[1]
Red Sonja and Zula took Nafertari to Zamboula, where she seduced Jungir Khan, the city's satrap. After meeting Conan, Nafertari desired to journey to Vendhya and departed Zamboula.[3]
Religion
The lower classes of Zamboula worshiped Hanuman[4] in a disgusting cult. The upper classes considered Hanuman an abomination, but possibly more due to social prejudice and racial fears than based on authentic moral indignation.
A pagan sect had the black mute eunuch Strabo strangle children for holy sacrifice.[5] While the cult nor its deities aren't mentioned by name, this fits the worship of Yajur, the god of Kosala.Residents
Notes
- Zamboula was created by Robert E. Howard in his story "Shadows in Zamboula" (Weird Tales; November, 1935), adapted in Savage Sword of Conan #14 (September, 1976), written by Roy Thomas and penciled by Neal Adams.
