History
Liberia is one of several African countries with natural resources that suffered when various greedy groups mined those reserves, in the process causing conflicts that only harmed the Liberians. It is one of the examples of African territories harmed by outside mediation that made T'Chaka, King of Wakanda, cautious in his dealings with outsiders, and he mentioned Liberia when meeting with a (fake) United Nations delegation offering to help him mine Wakanda's Vibranium; that encounter, due to T'Chaka's resistance, ended with his assassination.[2]
More recently, there were a number of international terrorist and/or criminal groups in Liberia, some of them moved to African country Azania when a civil war started there because of the Azanian black population rebelling against the Apartheid-like Azanian state, and had strong opposition from an uncompromising faction of the ruling white minority.[3]
Later, the Heavenly Path cult registered a ship in Liberia to use as a mobile base of operations. When the Path's leader, Loving Elder, became a fugitive across multiple continents and his organization was internationally condemned on charges of terrorism, the situation became especially tense and Liberia was pressured to renounce the ship's legal status; simultaneously, an American military base in Guam shot Tomahawk Cruise Missiles against the boat. Although the missiles were intercepted, the X-Men infiltrated the ship and defeated the Loving Elder and his people.[4]
Even later, when the mutants founded the island-nation of Krakoa, they turned to the Hellfire Trading Company to distribute Krakoa-produced pharmaceuticals to friendly nations, and to smuggle mutants out of unfriendly nations. Liberia was a controversial country in that regard: A report for the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Intelligence reported evidence that mutants in Liberia were being imprisoned and offered to Krakoa in exchange for priority distribution of their exports, with the document's author theorizing that Krakoan mutants would surely respond. Krakoa prepared a ship loaded with medicines for "an African nation that can't take the deal publicly without plunging into civil war", which could very well have been Liberia, but such transport was hijacked by mercenaries led by Batroc to take the cargo to the United States; Krakoa sent a replacement shipment to the intended destination, and then sent the Marauders to stop Batroc.[1]
