Galactus offered Khonshu to become his new Herald; Khonshu defiantly refused and was killed for it. In his final moments, Khonshu summoned his avatar, the Moon Knight. Galactus warned that his planet was about to be consumed, and Moon Knight offered himself as a Herald, promising to find Galactus another suitable planet. Galactus agreed and empowered Moon Knight with Power Cosmic but told him to hurry, as he was hungering. Moon Knight flew outwards, overwhelmed by his new powers, but before long he was confronted by the former Heralds of Galactus. They planned to strike at their former master and warned Moon Knight to stand down. Moon Knight lashed out, realizing that he exhibited different powers depending on which of his personalities was in charge. Easily holding his on against four Heralds at once, Moon Knight nevertheless realized that he could not bring himself to doom entire worlds. Refusing to perform his duty to Galactus, he disengaged from the fight and sped back to Earth.

Upon arriving, he discovered that he sped not only through space but through time, and that in the meantime Galactus had already decimated all of Earth's defenders and now prepared to consume what was left of the planet. Moon Knight tried to fight him, only to be effortlessly swatted away. The Fallen Heralds arrived and challenged Galactus, who easily killed Silver Surfer, Firelord, and Terrax, with only Frankie Raye left alive. Moon Knight combined all of his personalities and struck at Galactus with all of his powers at once. Though it did not injure the World Devourer, it irritated him enough to convince him to abandon Earth and seek more sustenance and Heralds elsewhere. Before departing, Galactus stripped Moon Knight of his Power Cosmic. Marc collapsed into Frankie Raye's arms, seemingly dead, only to immediately open his eyes again, as his work was still not done.
