Benin is a country of Africa. It is bordered by Togo at west, Burkina Faso at northwest, Niger at northeast, Nigeria at east, and by the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) at south.[1]
The land was previously known as Dahomey, and was the setting of an early worship of the Vodū, as early as the 12th century, by the Fon people.[2]
History
12th century
As early as the 12th century, the Fon people of Dahomey (in modern-day Benin) started worshiping the Vodū gods (as did the Yoruba people of the Niger River valley, in modern-day Nigeria).[2]
Alternate realities
Earth-199999
An Antique Vibranium Warhammer was discovered in Benin and believed to have originated from that region during the 7th century (though it was in fact a rare Vibranium artifact from ancient Wakanda).[3]Residents
Notes
Kokou, one of the Gods of Wakanda[4] was inspired by a war orisha from our reality who is worshiped in Benin.[5] The Gods of Wakanda are known as Orishas, orisha is a Yoruba word meaning spirit or deity,[6] in the Marvel Universe, Yoruba is one of the languages spoken in Wakanda[7] and which in our reality, is also spoken in Benin.
- The Dora Milaje from Wakanda looks like an army of women that existed in Dahomey, Ahosi.[8]
