Ergoth Dunamis (also known simply as Ergoth) is a devil / demon[4] who was responsible for the collapse of the ancient kingdom Sharenian.

Story

Sharen III, the king of Sharenian, was once a kind and noble king who was driven to paranoia and insanity by a gem called the Rubian, which was said to grant eternal life and the ability to revive the dead. Sharen III, believing that his son Prince Sharen IV wanted to steal the Rubian and the throne, attempted to have his son executed, but Kellad, the captain of the royal guard, intervened to prevent Sharen III from killing a member of the royal family. Sharen IV, seeing the danger that faced both himself and Kellad, convinced Kellad to stand aside and keep an eternal pledge to protect Sharenian no matter what. The King accused Kellad of treason and dismissed him from the court, and Kellad then formed his own squad of knights rejected from becoming official Sharenian Knights.

Sharen III, desperate to keep the Rubian safe, made a deal with Ergoth Dunamis to protect the Rubian at any cost. Years later, Sharen IV led a coup in response to his father going insane, unaware of the king's deal with Ergoth. Sharen III summoned Ergoth in response to the coup, only to immediately regret it after Ergoth, enamoured with the Rubian's power, summoned a hoard of other demons to attack the kingdom and its citizens. The king fled into Sharenian's underground waterway and wrote a will expressing his regrets, and was eventually killed by one of Ergoth's minions.[5]

Kellad learned of this and led his squad, consisting of Hardin, Ain, Ryan, Quieg, and Ed, to destroy Ergoth and save Sharenian. As the group prepared to defeat him, Ergoth uttered a curse that transported the group back to a few hours prior, where they first entered the castle of Sharenian. The group attempted to reach Ergoth again before he could utter his curse, but were unsuccessful and ended up transported back in time again. No matter what method the group attempted, they would always end up transported back in time. Ain speculated that Ergoth made a clone of himself and transferred his power to them to keep the squad occupied while the real Ergoth was in a location outside of the kingdom. She also speculated Ergoth sent them to a parallel dimension, but it was quickly dismissed.

The squad, forced to relive the fall of Sharenian for centuries, eventually went insane and turned on Kellad after discovering that he was in possession of the Rubian, which was given to him by Sharen IV . The group believed that Kellad wanted to use the Rubian to revive Sharen IV and only used them as means to an end. Kellad was forced to order Quieg (who only cared about following orders and completing his mission) to kill his former comrades, and then destroyed the Rubian, revealing that it was an ordinary gem with no special powers.

Throughout these events, the White Mage disguised himself as Sharen IV and would repeatedly convince Kellad to never give up his loyalty to the prince, facilitating Kellad's insanity and turning him into an eternally loyal servant. After Kellad's group killed each other, the White Mage, still disguised, informed Kellad that centuries had passed and that Ain's speculation was correct: the group was in fact trapped in a parallel dimension created by Ergoth Dunamis. He also informed Kellad that Ergoth built a demon empire on top of Sharenian's remains, which was eventually destroyed by a group of adventurers, leaving nothing but Ergoth and the Rubian. After escaping the parallel dimension, he defeated Ergoth Dunamis's clone for the last time and retrieving the Rubian in the real world. The White Mage infused the Rubian with the power to bring his squad back to life, provided they find new bodies to inhabit.

As Kellad relayed the story of Sharenian and the Rubian to a group of treasure-hunting explorers (Mogg the Warrior, Khalid the Magician, Juli the Bowman, Coleman the Thief, and Freya the Pirate), he presents it to them as a reward for listening to his story. Upon touching the Rubian, the souls of Kellad's former allies fuse with the group of explorers, taking over their bodies and forming new beings that would become the Elite Bosses; Hardin fused with Mogg and became Mogadin the Black Knight, Khalid fused with Ain and became Khaliain the Mad Mage, Juli fused with Ryan and became Jurai the Vicious Hunter, Coleman fused with Quieg and became CQ57 the Rampant Cyborg, Freya fused with Ed and became Freyd the Bad Brawler, and Kellad fused with the fallen clone of Ergoth to become Darknell. The new group pledged to serve the White Mage and become his eternal servants.
