Mock was a notorious pirate and cut-throat who once had a monopoly on Malaz Island. He was headquartered out of Mock's Hold in Malaz City. Mock had taken Tattersail as a lover, though he was later overthrown by the Emperor-to-be Kellanved and his assassin companion Dancer.[1]
In House of Chains
Admiral Nok told Adjunct Tavore Paran about Kellanved's family's early days in Malaz City. Kellanved and Dancer had hired a handful of locals to conquer the island's criminal element, which made Mock their prime target. Nok characterised the pirate as a cold-blooded killer. Nok had nearly fallen prisoner to the pirate, when the battered corsair upon which he served as first mate had been seized by Mock in the Malaz City harbour. Mock used the prisoners as part of an exchange with the Kingdom of Unta.[2]
In The Bonehunters
Adjunct Tavore Paran, T'amber, and Kalam Mekhar fled their ill-fated meeting with Empress Laseen at Mock's Hold and attempted to return to the 14th Army's fleet in the harbour. An attack by a Hand of Claw at the base of Rampart Way convinced Kalam to take a less direct route. He guided the trio into the Lightings District where he knew of a secret tunnel into the Old Upper Estates.[3]
Kalam brought them to an abandoned estate that had once been the home of Mock's family. Inside was a natural cistern through which Dancer and Kellanved had once tunneled to rob Mock of his treasure hoard built from twenty years of piracy. Mock's family was left destitute and the money was used to finance Kellanved and Dancer's early ventures in piracy. Eventually they usurped Mock and lay claim to all of Malaz Island. The cistern became known as the Well of Plenty among those few who knew of it.[4]

In Kellanved's Reach
After Kellanved and Dancer took over Mock's Hold, the mage Nedurian noted there were rumours of funds being raised to construct Mock's Barrow for the pirate-king's remains.[5]
