Hish Tulla [HISH TOO-lah][1] was a Tiste Andii in the time of ancient Kharkanas.[2]
In Toll the Hounds
Endest Silann recalled an important moment from the long-ago civil war amongst the Tiste Andii when he was just a lowly Acolyte serving the Temple of Mother Dark in the Citadel of Kharkanas.[2][3] The Temple sent him to Suruth Common Forest to witness a meeting between Anomander Rake, Andarist, and Silchas Ruin. Rake expected the unasked-for intrusion while Ruin was suspicious as the three meant to discuss a secret plan involving treachery and the spilling of kin's blood. When Ruin asked Endest why the Temple had chosen to trust them as opposed to Hish Tulla or Manalle, Endest revealed it was because the three brothers were talking rather than killing each other. The three brothers' plan called for offering themselves as mitigators between Drethdenan and Vanut Degalla. Hish Tulla and Manalle had already agreed to a pact though Ruin was worried that Manalle was no fool and was already suspicious. He was less worried about Hish discovering their true plan because she was not subtle, did not lie, and would have made her desires plain.[3]
Later, Endest Silann witnessed Rake come to the Citadel, freshly changed by the murder of T'iam, to confront Mother Dark. Rake brought Endest Silann with him as they walked to Mother Dark's temple. War had already come to the Citadel and bodies from the various Tiste Andii factions littered the ground. Amongst those Endest recognised were Andii from the factions of Hish Tulla, Anomander Rake, Andarist, Silchas Ruin, Drethdenan, and Vanut Degalla. Rake told Mother Dark that he planned to unite the Andii and end the civil war. He said the resistance of Andarist, Drethdenan, and Vanut Degalle was ending, while Hish Tulla, Silchas Ruin, and Manalle had fled. In response, Mother Dark forsook him, denied all her first children, and closed the Dark to them all.[2]
In Forge of Darkness
Millennia before the events of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, Hish Tulla was the Tiste mistress of Tulla Hold in Kurald Galain. Although relatively young, she considered herself a spinster, scarred by the many loves in her life.[4] Her first love was Anomander Rake and she later had a short-term romance with his brother, Silchas Ruin. She still maintained good relations with both and had a reputation for affability and integrity.[5]
Hish took in the wayward Orfantal as well as his self-appointed guardian, Gripp Galas, when they arrived safely in Kharkanas. Before returning to the service of Anomander, Gripp and Hish realized they had romantic feelings for each other and Hish secured Gripp's release from his master.[6]
