Grinner was a Napan of much repute, and a member of the Old Guard.
In Return of the Crimson Guard
Korbolo Dom invoked Grinner's name amongst a list of famed Napans that included Urko Crust, Cartharon Crust, Amaron, Nok, and Surly. The First Sword of the Empire asked several leaders of the Talian League if they knew "what it was like to grow up on Napan in the wake of such names?" Korbolo concluded by saying his own name would soon eclipse them all.[1]
In Deadhouse Landing
Grinner was Lady Sureth's bodyguard.[2] He was a burly, scarred knife-fighter and very good at playing a strategic game of Troughs. Yellowed horn knife grips stood out from his vest. He kept the knives in leather sheaths.[3] He was also a swordsman.[4] His voice was soft, a jarring contrast to his savage looks.[5]
Grinner was one of the Napan crew working at Smiley's in Malaz City.[6] When a group of toughs came to the inn in pursuit of Dancer, Grinner, standing by the door as bouncer, punched the leader in the side of the head causing her to collapse. He then lifted one of the other attackers overhead and smashed him on a table.[7]
Grinner supplied Cartharon Crust with information about Amaron and Noc.[8]
He was in a relationship with the Napan's best mage, Hawl.[9]
