Bliss Rolly

Bliss Rolly was the Master Sergeant of the Malazan regulars serving at the Silver Lake Garrison.[1] She reported to Lieutenant Nast Forn,[2] and was one of the handful of garrison soldiers who had survived the violence of the recent Teblor Slave Uprising in the town.[3][4] Nast Forn attributed her defence of the town during the uprising as the only reason anyone in the garrison or the town had survived.[2]

Bliss had deep brown eyes, plump lips,[5] and short and thick black hair that she was letting grow out.[6][2]

The garrison soldier, Lope, saw herself as Bliss' confidante. She said the Master Sergeant told her things about the state of empire when she had too much to drink.[7]

She wore somewhat worn marine gear.[2]

History

Bliss had a reputation as a hero with Captain Gruff of the XIVth Legion,[2] was recognised by the other marines,[8] and Sergeant Stick of Balk's Company noted that she was "famous".[9] How she earned this notoriety was not revealed. She had a past relationship with Spindle who was surprised to find her at Silver Lake and ready to welcome her "back into the fold."[2][5] Bliss Rolly would only say that she was "hiding" and Spindle told her she "shoulda run further."[2] Both Spindle and Bliss referred to an incident in the Jhag Odhan where she had "poked" a Jaghut and caused some amount of fighting. Spindle said the battered and bruised Jaghut had come to understand Malazan justice through Bliss.[5]

Bliss had sought peace and quiet at Silver Lake, but was angered to learn of the slaving operations that ran there in defiance of imperial law. Nothing was done because the garrison's captain was taking money from the slavers on the sly. Around the time of the Uprising, she had knifed him in a shack and then burned it to the ground. It was believed an escaped slave must have tracked him down and killed him. Despite his death, Bliss had the captain charged for corruption and stripped of rank so that his charred bones could be thrown into the lake and not allowed to rest with the other fallen Malazan soldiers.[5]
