Ghroth

This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. Ghroth is an Outer God in the expanded Cthulhu Mythos. The character was originally created by Ramsey Campbell for his short story "The Tugging", which depicts the entity as being a living planetoid.

Background

Ghroth is an Outer God that resembles a rust-colored moon with a single gigantic red eye that it closes to avoid detection. It's made up of molten iron, ash and gas, and splitting the surface are cracks or faults. Below its crust are vast seas, which are used to form a giant eye.

It drifts throughout the universe while singing its siren song, The Music of the Spheres. Any Great Old Ones or Outer Gods sleeping on a planet it passes is awakened by its call. Ghroth destroys planets as well and has destroyed the home of Baoht Z'uqqa-Mogg, forcing it to flee and take up residence on Earth. As Ghroth gets closer to a world, the planet experiences natural disasters in the form of erupting volcanoes, tidal waves, earthquakes, changing tides, and horrific storms.

In Other Media

  • Ghroth appears in the mobile game Tower of Saviors, as a sentient void that was spawned by Azathoth. Due to it being a formless entity, Ghroth compressed itself into a planetoid body to interact with lower dimensions.
  • In the role-playing video game World of Horror, Ath-Yolazsth was based on Ghroth.
  • In the role-playing video game Persona 3, Nyx Avatar's Moon body has a strong resemblance to Ghroth.
  • In the manga Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, the Medium (a crystalized entity composed of hatred and malice) has a strong resemblance to Ghroth.
  • In the manga Hellstar Remina, the titular antagonist appears to be heavily inspired by Ghroth.
  • The arcade game Pump It Up Phoenix features a boss song named after Ghroth, with a BPM of 212.
  • In the mobile game Neural Cloud (a spin-off of Girls' Frontline), an Entropic entity named after and visually based on Ghroth appears in chapter 12.5 "Irradiant Awakening". It is the Entropic Core of one of the allied characters after it has been corrupted by Entropy, but is ultimately destroyed.
