Wolf

This article refers to Farmer Maggot's dog. For other namesakes, see Wolf (disambiguation).

Wolf was one of three large wolf-like dogs kept by Farmer Maggot on his farm at Bamfurlong in the Marish. Like Maggot's other dogs, Grip and Fang, Wolf was ferocious by nature.[1]

As a youth living in Buckland, Frodo Baggins often made trips to steal Bamfurlong mushrooms. On the last occasion Maggot caught Frodo, beat him, and then threatened to have his dogs eat Frodo if the young Hobbit ever trespassed again. He then set the dogs on Frodo, chasing him all the way to the ferry. Although the dogs did him no harm (they were trained to only scare him), the incident so terrified Frodo that even thirty-some years later he quivered at the thought of crossing the old farmer's land.[1]

Circumstantial evidence suggests that Wolf was the largest and the most vicious, being the one who threatened Frodo Baggins when he encountered Maggot while travelling to Buckland during his youth.[1]

In adaptations

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Wolf appears like a crossbreed between a Rottweiler and a Dobermann. He is seen barking at the Nazgûl riders when they arrive in front of Goodman Maggot's house, then backing up into the house out of fear.

In The Lord of the Rings Online, Wolf, along with Grip and Fang, can be found next to Farmer Maggot in Bamfurlong. They can be interacted with during the "Chicken Play" and are also part of a festival "Maggot's Mushroom Hunt" mini-game.
