Vidumavi was a princess of the Northmen, the daughter of Vidugavia, who claimed the title of King of Rhovanion.
Biography
Vidumavi married the heir to Gondor's throne, Prince Valacar, when he was on a diplomatic mission to Rhovanion after the year TA 1250. The Dúnedain of Gondor feared that a shorter-lived bloodline would weaken Gondor's royal line.[1] In TA 1255, she bore Valacar a son and heir, the future King Eldacar. Because of Eldacar's short-lived Northman mother, many of the Dúnedain and Men of Gondor were unwilling to accept him as king. This led to the disastrous Kin-strife eighty-eight years later in TA 1432.[2]
She lived long for one of the Middle Men, although her exact date of death is unclear.
Vidumavi was also known by the name Galadwen after coming to Gondor with her husband and child.[1] Her character was described as noble and high of courage and she quickly adapted to Gondor, quickly learning its language and customs.
Etymology
The name Vidumavi is a Latinised version of the Gothic word Widumawi (wood-maiden).[3]
