Urfael was the sword of Talion.
It is non-canonical, as it does not appear in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and is only in the video game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
History
The sword served Talion in his life as a Ranger of Gondor, as a Captain of the Watch upon the Black Gate. Even after Talion's death and resurrection, he continued to use the sword in his quest for vengeance, reaping a fearsome tally on the Uruks of Mordor.
Upon becoming a Nazgûl, the sword completely reforged, and enemies killed by it have a chance of rising from the dead and becoming allied revenants.
Etymology
The name Urfael is Neo-Sindarin, meaning "Fiery Gleaming Brilliance." (prefix: Ur, meaning "Fire" or "Fiery" and suffix: Fael meaning "Gleaming Brilliance".)[citation needed]
Once all runes are unlocked on the blade, the unattested Neo-Sindarin inscription reads as follows:
- Narthan galad enin ûdyngin (A beacon of light to the unled.)
- Rûniel na fâl as vidyr 'wân na tharas (Blazing like fire with justice in the lands stained with foulness.)
- Târ pen ereb vingalad (One stands alone in the light.)
Trivia
- The five runes engraved on Urfael's crossguard spell out its name in Elvish Tengwar using the Full Mode of Gondor.
