The South Road was the chief highway in Gondor. It was wide enough for three lines of wagons and was well-paved. Along the eastern edge of the road was a broad green riding-track.[1]
The South Road ran from Minas Tirith south through Lossarnach, passing over the Crossings of Erui and then south to Pelargir.[2] After Pelargir it turned west through Lebennin, passing through Linhir before turning north, by-passing the Hills of Tarnost to reach Ethring. From there the road turned north west, passing Calembel and through the defile at Tarlang's Neck to terminate at Erech.[3]
It was expected in Minas Tirith that the Captains of the Outlands would arrive from the South Road.[1]
During the War of the Ring, Aragorn II Elessar, Legolas, Gimli and the Grey Company took the South Road with the Dead Men of Dunharrow, driving away the Corsairs of Umbar at Linhir before proceeding to Pelargir.[3]
