The Old Ford was the point where the Menn-i-Naugrim crossed the river Anduin, about forty miles downriver from the Carrock.[1][2][3]
The Dwarves of Khazad-dûm built a bridge at the fords in the late First Age to ease passage, but by the end of the Third Age, this bridge had disappeared.
In adaptations
In The Lord of the Rings Online, the Old Ford is located close to remains of Hadhodiant, a stone bridge built by the Dwarves which merely stands broken rather than being completely gone. On the Western bank is Vegbár, a toll-collecting station of the Beornings, making the Old Ford one and the same with Ford of Carrock. Towards the end of the War of the Ring, Orcs and Wargs came down from the Misty Mountains but were defeated in the Battle of the Old Ford by the Beornings and the Woodmen, who also suffered many casualties. Elrond, Arwen and their household also travel by the Old Ford on their way to Minas Tirith for Arwen's wedding. Later in the summer of T.A. 3019 Prince Durin VII leads a campaign to reclaim Gundabad, and a mission shows dwarven builders construct a wooden replacement for the missing section of the Hadhodiant, so as to not be reliant on the Old Ford.
