Karen Wynn Fonstad - Third Age

"'īdō kātha batīna lōkhī ("All roads are now bent")"
Mariners discovering the Round World[1]

In the wake of the Akallabêth, new lands and seas were created after Eru Ilúvatar "cast back" the Empty Lands east of Middle-earth and Belegaer in the west during the Change of the World in the Second Age.[2]

Description

The shape and size of these lands is not clarified in the Akallabêth, but since mariners were able to sail further west returning to their beginning, it is possible that these lands were very large islands of a sort.[3]

History

After Númenor was destroyed by Eru Ilúvatar because of the deeds of its king, the world was changed and made into a round sphere. The spirituality of Aman was removed from the accessible circles of the world and the seas were bent so that no Man could never again find the Undying Lands. In the place of Aman, new lands and seas emerged in the west after the Empty Lands and Belegaer were "cast back".[2]

Sometime after the Akallabêth before the end of the Second Age or near the beginning of the early Third Age, the new lands were discovered by the great mariners of the Dúnedain living in Middle-earth who, yearning for the west, sailed in the sea to the west searching for the Meneltarma as it was said in legend that the summit, the Hallow of Eru, became an island risen from the sea from which the sight of the Undying Lands could be descried. While the Hollow of Eru was never found and many mariners did not sail far, some of them journeyed far enough and came upon new lands and seas that they discovered were very much like the old ones where they were mortal and could not live forever. It is untold whether these mariners returned to Middle-earth afterwards, but the mariners "that sailed farthest" circumnavigated Arda until they reached Rhûn, and thus upon discovering that they could circumnavigate the world, some among them reported that the Straight Road no longer physically existed.[2]

Legacy

The new lands may have consisted of the physical landmass of Aman while the Valar and the Calaquendi spiritually left the world. The physical landmass remained to eventually become the Americas in the later Ages of Awakening.[4]
