Mar-talmar, also known as Talmar Ambaren, Martalmar, the Earthroots, or the Abyss,[1] were the uttermost foundations of the Earth in the Hidden Half of Arda far beneath the edge of the world.[2] The opposite to this is the Firmament.[1]
Etymology
Mar-talmar, or Martalmar, is a name in Quenya meaning "Roots of the Earth",[2] being derived from már ("home, dwelling, habitation; earth")[3] and talmar, the plural form of talma ("basis; base, foundation, root")[4].[5]
