Lithlad was a region located in the eastern portion of Mordor.
Description
Lithlad was an ashen plain of Mordor, south of the Ered Lithui and east of the Plateau of Gorgoroth.[1]
The Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad suggests that the nature of the landscape of Lithlad was linked to the activity of Mount Doom. In particular, the author suggests that the ashes erupted by the volcano made the whole region of Núrn fertile and suitable for cultivation.[2][3]
In adaptations
Video games
Lithlad is a playable region in The Desolation of Mordor expansion pack to Middle-earth: Shadow of War. In the game, it is said that Númenóreans once had dominion over Lithlad during the Second Age, populated as a remote part of their empire. Being one of many distant locations they visited, many lost artifacts and ancient ruins remained there from this time.
The region is described in the game to have become ideal for dry-land farming due to long ages of continuous fallout from Mount Doom, which enriched the region with large amounts of ash.
Etymology
Lithlad is a Sindarin word for 'ash-plain'.
