Lórellin

Lórellin, also known as Lake Irtinsa[1] and the pools of Estë, was a dark[2] lake within the Gardens of Lórien in far western Valinor whose sides were wrought by the Valar of "silver and white marbles".[1][3]

Lórellin was surrounded by a forest of dark yew[1] trees shadowing it. At its center lay an island where the Vala Estë, wife of Irmo, slept during the day. Lórellin was loved by many inhabitants of Valinor, including the other Valar, since it had fountains that brought refreshment.[2]

Etymology

Lórellin is a Quenya name likely meaning "lake of sleep"[4] or "dream pool"[5]. It consisted of lórë ("slumber;[6] dream")[7] and the root lin ("pool, mere, lake")[8].[9]

Lórellin is pronounced loare'llin.[4]

In other versions

In the earliest version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales, Lórellin was where the Vala Irmo hoarded the dew of the Rose of Silpion. Ilinsor, who later became the guardian of the Moon often drank from the lake's "quiet waters" because it was bathed in the light of Telperion.[1]
