Ingwion was a Vanyarin Elf, the son of Ilwen and Ingwë, High King of the Elves.[1]
Biography
Ingwion was born in Cuiviénen to Ingwë and Ilwen during the Years of the Trees. He had one younger sibling and was a cousin of Indis.[1] After the Great Journey, when he and his kindred came to Aman, they first dwelt in Tirion, but soon came to love the full light of the Two Trees, and relocated to Valinor at the base of Taniquetil. Ingwion likely dwelt there for many years with his family.
In the year 545 of the late First Age, Ingwion was the leader of the Vanyar who came with the Host of the Valar to Middle-earth to fight in the climatic War of Wrath.[3]
During the war, Ingwion was the leader of a force of Vanyar Elves tasked with retaking Eglarest. They were successful in driving the Orcs away from the shores during the battle.[4]
After the war, Ingwion returned to Aman and eventually built a great tower in Kôrtirion in Alalvinórë, the central region of Tol Eressëa.[5]
Sometime later, Ingwion started a family and eventually his granddaughter, Meril-i-Turinqi, became the Lady of Tol Eressëa after Ingwion went back to Valinor.[6]
Etymology
Ingwion is a compound of his father's name Ingwë and the Quenya patronymic suffix -ion, wherefore his name means "Son of Ingwë".[7]
In other versions
In earlier versions of the legendarium, he was called Ingwiel, son of Ingwë; but was mistakenly replaced by Finarfin son of Finwë in the text, when both should have been named then.[8]
