Halad, otherwise known as Halbar and Chieftain of Brethil, was the title of the chieftain of the Haladin of the Forest of Brethil during the First Age.[1]
History
During Folkmoots, it was the Halad who would sit upon the Halabor as the judge. This was seen in the account of Húrin's trial, in the years following his son's death.[2]
Etymology
Halad was a name in the Halethian language meaning warden ("Stone").[1]
Other versions
In a note to the text, Christopher Tolkien mentioned that Tolkien planned on changing the name Halad to Halbar as a further language development,[1] though it is not known if Tolkien meant for it to be an alternate title or a replacement title.
