Fanuin was an Ainu, in earlier versions of the legendarium.

History

Fanuin was the Ainu who represented years. He was the son of Aluin, the eldest of the Ainur, who represented the time itself, and his siblings were Ranuin, who represented the month, and Danuin, who represented the day.[1] After arriving in Valinor, he told the Valar that they would give them their services of subtle craft. After working and labouring in Aulë's house for thirteen moon-cycles, he finally completed his work. It was exceedingly large and heavy, and he could not carry it forth himself, so the Gods sent forth seven of Tulkas' stoutest to bring to the Valar Fanuin's work: two metal objects that would become the Sun and Moon. Fanuin bound the Sun and Moon together with a mighty cable, so that Manwë might govern their coming and going in the skies, and steer them.
