Elf-wardens[1] were highly skilled Elf-rangers and march-wardens tasked with guarding the outer borders of their realms.
History
First Age
In the First Age, King Thingol of Doriath was served by march-wardens, who guarded the borders of their forest. Two march-wardens, Beleg Cúthalion and Mablung, fought in the Nírnaeth Arnoediad and survived.[2] Túrin briefly served under the march-wardens, and was often given tasks with his friend Beleg.[3] At the end of the First Age, Doriath was sacked by the Dwarves of Nogrod and later by the remaining Sons of Fëanor in the Ruin of Doriath. Doriath was ultimately defeated, and its march-wardens along with it.[4]
Third Age

When the Fellowship of the Ring arrived in Lothlórien, its march-wardens, led by Haldir and his brothers Rúmil and Orophin, first met them. These Elf-wardens wore grey-hooded cloaks. Haldir led the Fellowship to Caras Galadhon,[5] for them to meet Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn, once a Prince of Doriath.[6]
Named Elf-wardens
Inspiration
J.R.R. Tolkien may have based the marchwardens on the real-life Lord Warden of the Marches of England. These wardens had the task to maintain peace and order in the land.
In adaptations
In The Lord of the Rings film trilogy
In The Fellowship of the Ring film (2001), a group of archers led by Haldir ambush and question the Eight Walkers, allowing them to enter their land.
In video games

In Electronic Arts' game The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, they are the basic units of the Elves. They are divided in warriors, which have leather armor, one-handed swords and shields similar to those used by the Ñoldor on the first film, and archers which have purple robes, leather armor and Bows of the Galadhrim. They are named Lórien Warriors and Lórien Archers in the game.
In the video game, The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, there are a group of Elf-wardens that are known as the Lothlorien Rangers. These Elf-wardens are seen in the Fangorn Forest level, in which Aragorn rescues an injured one from Giant Spiders. After healing the elf, he tells how he and his companions had tracked a group of Orcs with the Mark of Saruman. Later Aragorn finds three of them fighting the Orcs and goblins. After helping the Lothlorien Rangers, they tell him that Saruman is building lumber camps in the forest and their captain went ahead. Aragorn finds him fighting alone against three Uruk-hai scouts and a band of heavily armed Orcs. When they are defeated, the captain gives Aragorn the Phial of Galadriel, before going back to Lothlórien.
