Dingle

This article is about the place in the Old Forest. For the place in Fangorn Forest, see Derndingle.

The Dingle was a deep wooded valley of willow[1] trees that was located in the Old Forest.[2]

History

The River-woman, Goldberry's mother, made a house in a "deep weedy pool" where the Withywindle ran through the deepest part of the Dingle. Old Man Willow once ensnared Tom Bombadil in the willow-dingle, but Tom escaped.[1]

In the year 3018 of the late Third Age, the Hobbits, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took encountered Old Man Willow in the Dingle, but were saved by Tom Bombadil.[3]

Two Hobbit poems were written by Bucklanders who possessed great knowledge on the Dingle.[2]

It was further known that all the strangeness of the Old Forest had connections to the Dingle.
