- "But it is even as I said: the roots of Evil lie deep, and from far off comes the poison that works in us, so that many do these things – at times, and become then indeed like the servants of Melkor."
- —Borlas to Saelon.
The Dark Tree, also known as the Morgoth-element[1] or Melkor-ingredient, was a abstract concept of J.R.R. Tolkien's in relation to the works and forces of evil that opposed the Free Peoples of the World.[2]
History
In the early days of Arda, Morgoth poured much of his power into Arda. This power, or influence, was referred to as the Morgoth-element[1] and later, abstractly, as the Dark Tree.[2]
In the year 220 of the Fourth Age, Borlas and Saelon discussed the nature of evil as a Dark Tree that grows perpetually, and that even if it is hewed at all times, it would always return as its roots cannot be destroyed. In the context of their time, Borlas applied the term to a describe a secret and dark cult of misguided Gondorians who do not remember the evil of old. It involved the worship of the Dark Lords, connected to the term Herumor. Berelach, Borlas' son, might have been a member of the cult due to his belief that "peace makes things slack" and general disregard to a prior incident involving some Shipmen in his fleet.[2]
The oldest root of the Dark Tree began with Morgoth, but lesser roots grew from his influence, representing those allied with him, his lieutenants, and the Úvanimor.
