The Balchoth were a fierce group of Easterlings that served the Dark Lord Sauron and were hostile to Gondor.
History
Like their kinsmen, the Wainriders, whom the Balchoth could be said to have succeeded, they rode in chariots and wagons.[1] Being under the influence of Sauron, who was still concealed in Dol Guldur, they began to migrate westwards, settling in the lands between Mirkwood and the River Running. The Easterlings often made incursions into the territories of the Northmen of Rhovanion and their numbers were increased by other wicked Men from Rhûn.
Stirred by Sauron, the Balchoth finally attacked Gondor in TA 2510 and were joined by Northern Orcs pouring out of the Misty Mountains. They overran the plains of Calenardhon and almost destroyed the army of the Ruling Steward Cirion, but the Eastern invaders and their Orc allies were defeated by the Éothéod under Eorl the Young at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant; the entire host was pursued and slaughtered by Eorl and his horsemen. The Balchoth do not reappear in sources after this, although Easterlings continued to trouble Rohan, killing Eorl and finally being driven off by his son, Brego.
