In The Hobbit films (2012 - 2014), Azog's army was amassed in the fortress of Dol Guldur, where Azog and the Necromancer were taking refuge. This was so their army could make a surprise attack on the dwarves. The army made its first appearance during the attack on the Lonely Mountain and the city of Dale in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The army surprise attack was only successful due to the aid given by the Were-worms, who dug a giant hole leading straight to the battlefield. His main infantry was rumored to be tens of thousands strong, with the main portion consisting of different Orcs, goblin mercenaries, and bats appearing as "seas of locusts".
