Amon Ereb was a hill on the southern plains of East Beleriand. Located between Ramdal and the river Gelion,[1] the hill had gentle slopes and stood alone, giving the impression of being much mightier than it actually was.[2]
History
During the First Battle of Beleriand, Amon Ereb was where King Denethor of the Nandor made his last stand, surrounded by an army of Orcs.[3] Amon Ereb, the highest point in the plains and the easternmost hill of Andram, held tremendous strategic importance in the War of the Jewels. It overlooked the eastern passage around the Long Wall of the Andram, guarding the northern routes to Taur-im-Duinath. Later, Caranthir fortified the hill following the Dagor Bragollach as a fallback position. After the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, the Sons of Fëanor withdrew to Amon Ereb.[4]
Etymology
Amon Ereb was Sindarin for 'lonely hill'.
