The Ambarkanta ("Shape of the World") is a collection of cosmological essays, maps, and diagrams of Tolkien's conceptions of Middle-earth and the rest of Arda. These works detail his vision of the physical structure of Middle-earth and the larger world of Arda. It is featured in Christopher Tolkien's The Shaping of Middle-earth.[1]
The collection includes five maps and diagrams that illustrate the shape and structure of Arda both before and after significant cosmological changes. These maps show the layout of the continents, seas, and other geographical features, as well as the different layers of the atmosphere and the void beyond. The text is attributed to Rúmil, an Elvish loremaster, and represents a more developed phase of Tolkien's cosmology compared to his earlier works.
