Chindon'ya

Chindon'ya (also translated as Publicity Band Member[1]) is one of the role-playing subclasses in Elder Tale. While easy to get, few Adventurers have it.[2]

Overview

Traditionally, chindon'yas are street musicians who don elaborate costumes and go around advertising for shops and other establishments, particularly during a new store's grand opening or during price discounts. The subclass, reflecting that, is good at attracting attention by dressing flashy, advertising, promoting and attracting people.

A joke subclass, it provides little benefits to its bearers. In fact, the only skill it provides is the ability to bang on drums really loudly and make a lot of noise while walking.

Chindon’yas learn various dances and movements (taunts), such as throwing kisses and belittling dances, but those have almost no effect in the game. In some cases at higher levels, you can get special motions and outfits that increase your Hate and better attract the attention of enemies, but the amount gained is not worth the leveling effort. Chindon’yas can also get other flashy (and tacky) costumes to stand out, but since it is a costume and not equipment, it only changes the appearance and gives no in-game bonuses. It’s generally known as a punishment subclass or one you accidentally take when you don't know what it's worth for.

There are very few People of the Earth who have heard of that name, and it is a very rare subclass that is almost impossible to find, even in a big city.

Trivia

  • The typical Japanese term for Chindon'ya is チンドン屋 (uses katakana) rather than ちんどん屋 (uses hiragana). The two terms are more-or-less interchangeable, but the former term is more common.[3]
